Before you travel.
How close will I get to the chimpanzees?
Guidelines ask visitors to stay around seven metres from the chimpanzees for their protection and yours, though the chimpanzees themselves sometimes move closer as they feed and travel.
Is chimpanzee tracking physically demanding?
It is moderate. Expect two to four hours of walking on uneven forest paths, sometimes muddy, with occasional off-trail sections as the trackers follow the group.
What should I wear in the rainforest?
Long trousers, a long-sleeved shirt in neutral colours, sturdy walking shoes or boots, a light rain jacket, insect repellent and a small daypack for water and camera gear.
When is the best time to visit Kibale?
Kibale is a year-round destination. The drier months make trails easier underfoot, while the wetter months bring lush forest, abundant fruit and excellent birding.
Can children participate?
Chimpanzee tracking has a minimum age requirement, generally around twelve years. Younger children are welcome on the journey and enjoy the wetland walk and community visit.
How long is the tracking experience?
The full activity usually takes half a morning, including a briefing, the walk to find the group and an hour observing the chimpanzees once located.
Can this journey be combined with gorilla trekking?
Beautifully. Kibale pairs naturally with Bwindi for a two-primate journey, and with Queen Elizabeth National Park for a savannah safari.
What other wildlife can I expect to see?
